Grammar

The ない-form

The ない-form is the plain negative, and the patterns of this lesson are built on it. Group I: change the i-sound before ます to an a-sound and add ない: のみます → のまない, まちます → またない, かえります → かえらない.

  • Kusuri o nomanakereba narimasen. I have to take some medicine.
  • Pasupooto o wasurenaide kudasai. Please don't forget your passport.
  • Ashita wa konakute mo ii desu. You don't have to come tomorrow.

Please don't: 〜

The ない-form plus で ください asks someone not to do something: ここで しゃしんを とらないで ください. It's also a kind thing to say: しんぱいしないで ください (please don't worry).

  • Koko de shashin o toranaide kudasai. Please don't take photos here.
  • Koko de tabako o suwanaide kudasai. Please don't smoke here.
  • Daijoubu desu kara, shinpaishinaide kudasai. It's all right, so please don't worry.

To say you have to do something, change the ない of the ない-form to なければ なりません: のまない → のまなければ なりません. It's something you have to do, whether you want to or not.

  • Kusuri o nomanakereba narimasen. I have to take some medicine.
  • Doyoubi madeni hon o kaesanakereba narimasen. I have to give the book back by Saturday.
  • Kyou wa zangyoushinakereba narimasen. I have to work late today.

Don't have to: 〜なくても いいです

To say something isn't necessary, change ない to なくても いいです: こない → こなくても いいです. It's the "no" answer to 〜なければ なりませんか: いいえ、ぬがなくても いいです.

  • Ashita wa konakute mo ii desu. You don't have to come tomorrow.
  • Iie, nuganakute mo ii desu. No, you don't have to.
  • Mada jikan ga arimasu kara, isoganakute mo ii desu. There's still time, so you don't have to hurry.

Making the object the topic: N は

To make the object of a verb the topic, put it first and use は in place of を: にもつを ここに おかないで ください → にもつは ここに おかないで ください (as for your bags, please don't leave them here).

  • Nimotsu wa koko ni okanaide kudasai. Please don't leave your bags here.
  • Uwagi wa koko de nuide kudasai. Please take your coat off here.
  • Hirugohan wa kaisha no shokudou de tabemasu. I have lunch in the company canteen.

By a time: 〜までに

までに gives a deadline: the action happens at some point before that time. まで (lesson 4) is different: it says how long something goes on. (I'll be back by five), (I work until five).

  • Kaigi wa goji madeni owarimasu. The meeting will be over by five.
  • Goji madeni kaerimasu. I'll be back by five.
